Liberal Democrat Portfolio Holder and Bridgewater County Council Candidate, Caroline Smith-Wright, has rejected a military parade marking the 80th Anniversary of VE DAY, calling it “too elitist”
Graeme Elliot, Conservative County Council candidate for Bridgewater says "I am saddened and shocked by the latest Liberal Democrat stance in Dacorum Borough Council confirming there are no plans to formally mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, a moment that shaped our nation. This comes just a year after thousands were spent celebrating the Borough’s 50th anniversary.
VE Day is not just a date on the calendar. It is a day that honours the sacrifice, courage and resolve of those who gave everything so that we might live in peace and freedom. To dismiss it is to forget the price paid for the liberties we cherish. In a time of growing uncertainty across the world, it is more important than ever to recognise the bravery of our armed forces past and present, and to honour the memory of those who never came home. Their stories must live on. VE Day is about remembrance, unity, and peace. It is a legacy that must be passed to future generations, so they understand the cost of freedom and the strength of a people who stood together in the face of tyranny.
We should be standing tall to remember our heroes, not putting fanfare around 50 years of a Council."
Simon Weston, CBE Falklands Veterand says 'I was disgusted to hear from Graeme that the Liberal Democrats in Dacorum have chosen not to formally commemorate the sacrificesmade by our armed forces to secure freedom, liberty and democracy for Europe during World War II.
Liberal Democrats later blamed the decision on Officers. Don't they realise they are in charge?
