Redbourn County Councillor Annie Brewster has launched a campaign to make the A5183 (also known as Redbourn Road) safer for cyclists between Redbourn and St Albans.

The campaign comes on the back of the Conservative Government announcing a pool of new funding available to improve walking and cycling infrastructure. The proposed cycle lane would link to the existing cycle routes on the Nickey Line and the St Albans Green Ring.

Cllr Brewster said, “If ever there was a time to take action on improving the safety of this incredibly dangerous stretch of road it is right now as more and more residents, indeed complete families, are taking to two wheels in a response to the coronavirus impact on our lives.

It is absolutely fabulous to see so many people out on bikes in our district but we need many more safe connective routes, particularly as vehicular traffic starts to return.”

Local MP Bim Afolami welcomed the campaign, “The plan for a cycle route on the Redbourn Road is a great initiative. This is a very dangerous road - both for cyclists and for car users - and the plans will help to make it safer for everyone.

I will be working hard to promote sustainable transport during the next few years and this is a great example of the kind of thing we can do.”
